Donating 10,000 meals in Pulses!

For #WorldPulsesDay Spud is donating 10,000 meals worth with pulses from our wonderful vendor Flourist! That may seem like a lot, but this goes to show, how efficient pulses are. Can you guess how much 10,000 meals in pulses costs? Believe it or not, it’s only $1,600! The cost efficiency and nutrition of pulses are what make them such a key part of food security.

What is World Pulses Day?

The purpose of World Pulses Day is to raise awareness of the importance of Pulses in contributing to sustainable food production, food security, and nutrition! Did you know that Canada is one of the second largest producers of Pulses in the world?

Why are Pulses so sustainable?

Nutrition: Pulses are an incredible source of plant-based protein, as well as a source of iron and fiber! One cup of cooked pulses provides more than half the recommended fiber needed in a day.

Cost: Pulses are much more cost-efficient than animal-based protein. Did you know protein from pulses cost 1/5 as the protein from milk? This makes them an efficient source of calories and protein.

Environment: Not only do pulses use significantly less land, water, and CO2 emissions than animal-based proteins, but they also help with biodiversity! Pulses have nitrogen-fixing properties which improve soil fertility. This extends the productivity of farmland.

What is a Pulse?

Pulses are edible seeds of plants in the legume family. Common pulses include: Chickpeas, Lentils (Green, red and black), Black Beans, Navy Beans, Kidney Beans, Split Peas (yellow and green)
