Dye your Easter eggs naturally.

Planning to dye Easter eggs this year? Rather than resort to artificial dyes to create your beautiful colours, why not try using natural dyes instead? Not only do you skip the chemicals, the results are absolutely stunning.

The colour of these dyes will vary depending on their concentration, the original colour of the eggs, and how long you leave the eggs to soak. All the more reason to experiment!

To prep your eggs, you can either hard boil them or prick them with a pin and empty them if you want to dye the shells. Older eggs work better for dyeing, so if you’re getting them directly from a farmer, you should wait a week before using them for this project.

Natural Easter Egg Dyes

Add 1 tbsp. white vinegar to every cup of strained dye liquid. You’ll need at least 4 cups of dye for every dozen eggs. For each cup of water, use:

1 cup purple cabbage – turns white eggs blue and brown eggs green

1 cup red onion skins – turns eggs lavender or red

1 cup yellow onion skins – turns white eggs orange and brown eggs red

1 cup shredded beets – turns white eggs pink and brown eggs maroon

2 tbsp. turmeric – turns eggs yellow

Instructions

Measure out your water into a pot. Add your dye material, and bring to a boil. Once boiling, turn the heat down to a simmer, cover, and cook for half an hour. The longer you cook your mixture, the stronger the dye will be. Once it’s reached a shade slightly darker than your desired finished colour, let it cool to room temperature.

Strain your dye, and add the vinegar. Pour over your eggs, making sure that they’re completely covered. Refrigerate your eggs and let them steep until they turn your desired colour. You can add a bit of oil to polish their shells if you like.
