In honour of International Women’s Day, we wanted to feature some of the amazing women at Spud. Did you know 52% of the workforce at Spud are women, and people assigned female at birth? We thought it best to hear from some of the women at Spud themselves, to learn about how they navigated through challenges and who inspires them.

What does international women’s day mean to you?
To me, this day is to celebrate the triumphs women have achieved to become equal through cultural, economic, and social change. As a mother of a daughter, I know the work is not done but I do feel positive about how our world is shaping up so my daughter will live in a world constantly being pushed for change.
Who is your female role model?
Maria Montessori is a hugely admirable woman to me, due to her intelligent social activism but more importantly her persistence to become a change maker for children’s education. I want the world to be reminded of her name because I believe a positive change in society only comes when we provide children with the building blocks of a strong education.
How do you feel as a woman working at Spud?
I feel great! It’s wonderful to be surrounded by so many skilled, articulate and passionate women (and men) as we all come together to make Spud amazing for our customers and do good for our planet.
Why do we need more women in leadership?
Simply said, we need diversification in leadership in all areas of our world, we need female representation in medicine, justice, education, and our corporate entities so that we are inclusive of all areas of our population. In this way, we thrive on diversity while cultivating a flourishing society.
What is one message you would give to any young woman or girl reading this post?
Embrace empathy as a leader. If ever there has been one thing I have not regretted it is giving people a chance to grow with the support and mentorship of a more experienced senior. Leading with empathy is in my mind the best way to allow for both mistakes that lead to learning opportunities so we allow people the growth they crave from their careers.

Who is your female role model?
Dolly Parton. She’s humble, kind, positive, wise, giving, accepting, funny, and down to earth with a sparkly sassy attitude. She chooses to put good into the world just because.
How do you feel as a woman working at Spud?
Honestly, I don’t see myself as an individual woman working at Spud. We really do work as a team at our warehouse in Victoria and we rely on each other to get the job done. We are a diverse bunch and I have wonderful coworkers. I feel like I fill the role of a sister, aunt, or friend working towards a common goal more than anything. Together we are our own organism in a special little ecosystem.
What is the most important piece of advice that you have been given?
I’ve taken in a lot over the years, but a few pieces that I try to live by are: be kind, stay curious and trust your gut.
What is one message you would give to any young woman or girl reading this post?
Well, to this I have a 3 part answer…
1. Find your passions in life. This is something that you do for yourself that recharges you, brings you happiness and fulfills you.
2. Find your purpose in life. This is something you do in service for others or for a cause greater than yourself. It has a deep connection to who you are or something that you have overcome.
3. Look to all sources for inspiration and go for it!

Favorite charity supporting woman or female-owned company/product?
I am a huge advocate for any and all initiatives that aim to bring awareness to period poverty and provide feminine hygiene products to those in need. The NWW (No Women Without) campaign is a wonderful organization that is local to Edmonton, and that Spud and Blush Lane have been lucky enough to partner with over the last couple of years. NWW advocates for safe, affordable and readily accessible feminine hygiene products for all women.
