navel oranges

Oranges are indisputably some of the best sources of vitamin C across the globe. Originally a hybrid between a pomelo and mandarin, the orange gained massive popularity on its own. In fact, orange trees had become the most cultivated trees in the world by 1987.

And one of the most common varieties of oranges is the navel orange. Navel oranges are named as such due to their easily identifiable “navel” at one end of the fruit. Because navel oranges have a long growing season, they have been widely distributed and are found in many parts of the world.

Navel oranges are known for their relatively thicker and easy-to-peel skin, as well as their slightly–yet pleasant–bitter and tart flesh compared to other sweet oranges. As such, they are not often used for pure juicing. They are, however, perfect for many other recipes that involve cooking, salads, or even sauces.
