DIY: NATURAL HAIR CARE PRODUCTS

FEELING INSPIRED? TRY OUR OTHER DIY PROJECTS!

There’s something really satisfying about DIY projects. It’s not only a fun past time, but during the process, you’re also made aware of every ingredient that goes into a homemade product. Because the truth is, too many products on the market contain toxic chemicals that we don’t really know about.

One particular category is hair products. Did you know that a lot of hair products contain carcinogenic chemicals, even baby shampoos? Not only that, but harsh chemicals found in a lot of shampoos also tend to strip away the natural oils produced by your hair, which only causes even greasier hair as your hair ends up overcompensating.

Here are a few homemade natural hair care product recipes made with natural ingredients that you need to try!

1. Baking Soda Shampoo

You only need baking soda and water to make the paste. Sounds too good to be true, but it really works. Take 2 tablespoons of baking soda in a bowl. Add a very small amount of water, just enough to make a paste. Use as you would a shampoo. This is perfect for build-ups. It can be drying for certain hair types, however, so a good conditioner to follow up would be ideal.

2. Coconut Castile Shampoo

Castile soap is a soap made with vegetable oils. It is known to be gentle, environmentally friendly, and free of harsh cleansers. It also serves perfectly as a base for making your own shampoo. Take 1/4 cup liquid castile soap, 1/8 cup canned coconut milk, 1/8 cup honey, 1 tablespoon olive or almond oil, and around 20 drops essential oils of choice. All of you have to do is shake all the ingredients together in a bottle before use.

3. Avocado Honey Hair Mask

Is there anything avocado isn’t good for? You’ve heard about its skin benefits, but it can also help repair damaged hair. Avocado has healthy fats, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins that will strengthen and nourish your hair. Take one ripe avocado; mix it with 2 tablespoons honey, 2 tablespoons olive oil, and 1 tablespoon lemon juice. Leave it on your hair for at least 20 minutes before rinsing off. The mixture will look pretty gross, but the shine left on your hair will be amazing.

4. Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse

Apple cider vinegar is a natural hair care product as it has a high pH level close to that of our hair, making it the ideal rinse! It also contains antibacterial and antifungal properties, remove build-ups, and adds shine to your hair. Mix apple cider vinegar with equal parts of water and spray it onto your hair, leaving it for three minutes before rinsing.

A lot of these ingredients are already found in many hair and body products on the market, but making your own DIY projects eliminates the unnecessary and unsafe chemicals you can’t even pronounce.
