2016 was a great year for Spud community initiatives, and we couldn’t have done it without YOU!
We think that the relationship between people and food is a special one, which is why as a grocer, we feel we are in a unique position to give back. Through the Spud outreach campaigns and projects, we’ve been humbled by the way our customers have helped turn many of these initiatives from ideas into realities, providing us with the opportunity to get out there and support our communities.
HERE’S WHAT WE DID:
GIFT CERTIFICATE HOT MEAL GIVE-BACK
Through our gift certificate program, we were able to donate 394 hot meals to less fortunate individuals across BC and Alberta. These meals will be distributed by Vancouver’s Union Gospel Mission, Victoria’s Our Place Society, Calgary’s Inn From The Cold, and Edmonton’s The Bissell Centre.
TURKEY DINNER AT THE RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE
On December 15th, several Spud staff volunteers spent a lovely evening cooking a holiday dinner for the children and families staying at the Ronald McDonald House. The house provides accommodation for seriously ill children and their families when they must travel to Vancouver for their child’s treatment at the BC Children’s Hospital.
We were blown away by the magic of the place. Complete with an arts and crafts studio, magic room, and LEGO lounge, they’ve made it as cozy and comfortable as possible for the families calling this place home during treatment time.
Using groceries from Spud, we cooked four turkeys and all the fixings for over 150 people. Once we had everything ready to go, everyone sat down to enjoy a delicious (if we do say so ourselves) holiday feast. For us, it was an honour to cook dinner for these families going through challenging times. We’re proud to support such an amazing organization, and hope to continue this tradition next year!
COAT DRIVE
With your winter wear donations, the Spud coat drive collected over 1000 coats, along with hundreds of toques, scarves, and mittens. This was a total team effort–from our wonderful customers digging through their closets for donations, to our drivers and staff packing up and delivering everything, to Union Gospel Mission, Women In Need, Project Warmth, and the Bissell Centre who distributed this winter wear to those who need it! We hope our drive helped a few folks in Vancouver stay warm this winter.
As we dive into 2017 we’re looking forward to another fantastic year full of good food, great people, and many more memorable experiences.
Cheers to you, and thank you supporting us!
