Once considered dairy alternative options for vegans, nut milks have since become favourites for all diets and preferences. And with more and more coffee shops offering different options, it’s no doubt that these delicious milks are here to stay.

We tried making various nut milks, including almond milk, cashew milk, and walnut milk, and they were all super tasty. All the homemade milks were drastically different in taste and consistency from the store-bought stuff. We really urge you to try it!

There is one non-dairy milk that has also been on the market for a while, and that’s the hemp milk. If you’ve ever tried store-bought hemp milk, you probably might have noticed that it has more of a grassy flavour that some might not enjoy. Because of this, we wanted to try making our own to see how different homemade hemp milk might taste.

What are the benefits of hemp milk?

If you’re wondering why anyone would switch out the healthy nut milks for something less popular and well-known, it’s because hemp milk is actually very healthy for you!

Hemp hearts are packed with essential fatty acids—omega-3, omega-6, and omega-9—as well as all nine essential amino acids. Fatty acids are helpful in reducing inflammation and lowering the risk of various diseases including arthritis, cancer, and heart-related ones.

They are also rich in nutrients including iron, phosphorus, magnesium, zinc, and vitamin E.

How do you make hemp milk at home?

Hemp milk is super easy, and actually a terrific choice if you’re looking for something instant and fresh, as hemp hearts don’t require soaking overnight like nuts do in order to make milk.

What you need:

1 cup hemp hearts

3 cups water

Pinch of salt

2 tablespoons maple syrup

1 tsp vanilla extract (optional)

How to prepare:

  1.       Pour the hemp hearts and water into the blend and set it on high for two minutes.
  2.       At the one-minute mark, add the salt and maple syrup. If you think the milk is a bit too ‘hempy’, add a teaspoon of vanilla extract.
  3.       Once the hemp hearts are completely pulverized, strain the milk with a nut milk bag or a thin cloth.
  4.       Squeeze out the milk until it’s completely strained before pouring it into a sealable container to store in the refrigerator.
  5.       Store in the fridge for up to five days.

And that’s it! Super easy and quick. What are your thoughts on hemp milk? Share with us your favourite homemade milk recipes!
