WE WILL NOT SELL SINGLE-USE PLASTIC WATER BOTTLES

Dear Spud Customers,

Four trillion plastic bottles have been used in the past ten years worldwide, and we can only imagine what this will mean for our children over the next ten years if we do not change. The science states that there will be more plastic than fish in our oceans by 2050 if we don’t stop the dependance on single-use plastics.

That is why Spud.ca has stopped selling all single-use plastic water bottles. All still, sparkling, and flavoured water on our website will now be limited to glass bottles and aluminum cans. Are glass and aluminum cans better for the environment than plastic? In most areas, from the resources that are used to make these materials to their likelihood of being recycled, the research suggests that they are.

The Canadian government did release an action plan for reducing plastic pollution, starting in 2021. However, in a recent survey you, our customers, told us that single-use plastic is a leading environmental concern of yours. Why wait to take action?

Now, we recognize that this ban is only a small piece of the puzzle when it comes to taking greater responsibility for the packaging we distribute, but we believe it is more important to start the process than it is to be perfect. At Spud.ca, we want to exemplify to our community and to the industry that every step is important, and that although the journey to zero waste is long, together we can get there. Zero waste guru Anne-Marie Bonneau says it best: “We don’t need a handful of people doing zero waste perfectly. We need millions of people doing it imperfectly”.

We have all bought bottled water, whether it was for convenience or because we were skeptical of water quality. However, there are sustainable alternatives, such as home water purifiers or carrying a reusable water bottle. Let’s make the switch.

Starting with bottled water is part of the solution, and by no means does it solve the problem. It does address one of the biggest changes we can make as individuals for the planet.

To all of our customers who have not been afraid to encourage us to do better when it comes to environmental sustainability, thank you. It is because you shared your passion for a healthy Earth and cleaner future for the next generation, that we can make changes as a company that build a stronger community for tomorrow. So, continue to share your voice, we are always listening!
