Spud is excited to announce that starting this summer, we’ll be delivering Tool Shed beer in Calgary. That’s right. Beer. Delivered. With your groceries. This is huge news, but one of the main reasons we’re so excited is that Tool Shed is just such a cool company!
About Tool Shed Brewery
Tool Shed Brewery founders Graham and Jeff quit their IT jobs to start a brewery, only to discover that their new business was illegal. At the time, Alberta law stated that to be considered a brewery and sell your product, you had to brew at least half a million liters of beer annually. Because of this, there were only 12 breweries operating in the province. For some, discovering your business venture was prohibited by provincial law would be deal breaker. But Graham and Jeff are problem-solvers. To get around the prohibitive law, they shipped their ingredients to British Columbia, brewed the beer there, and imported it back into Alberta. You could say they were determined.
The determination paid off. When the law finally changed, Graham and Jeff were the first to apply for a brewer’s license under the new regulations. And, because they already had beers in the marketplace, Tool Shed had amassed a loyal fan base. That meant they were able to to commission the construction of a 25 hectolitre brewing facility – a big step up from the literal shed in which they started the brewery.
Nowadays, Tool Shed beer is proudly brewed locally in Calgary. They are passionate about using local ingredients, especially Calgary barley, said to be the best in the world. They love collaborating with and supporting local farmers, producers, and small businesses. They regularly collaborate on beers with other local brewers and businesses like Phil & Sebastian Coffee Roasters. And the waste products from the brewery go to local farms to to be used as animal feed.
