This month we are featuring TriPow – a local Edmonton company that sells a superfood mixture of chlorella and spirulina. TriPow is brand new to Spud, and this magic green mixture is here just in time for St. Patrick’s Day!


Owners Allie and Simon have been using and recommending TriPow to their friends and family for years, so when the business came up for sale in October of last year, it was a no brainer for them to purchase it from the original founder, who began the company 5 years ago.


Allie and Simon’s passion for their company and the product they provide is obvious. They only use the purest and highest quality chlorella and spirulina, sourced from Taiwan. Algaes like chlorella and spirulina are susceptible to soaking up a lot of toxins and heavy metals from the environment around them. That is why the chlorella and spirulina used in TriPow are grown in a very controlled environment, and are constantly being tested throughout the process, from growing to packaging. Speaking of packaging, TriPow is packaged in non-toxic rice paper to ensure that the ingredients remain as pure as possible!


Another way that TriPow ensures that they’re delivering only the highest quality product can be seen by the way they process the chlorella. We’re going to get a little technical, but stay with us:  Chlorella has a hard cell wall, which needs to be cracked in order for us to be able to absorb and digest it. Many chlorella products use techniques such as milling or grinding in order to break the cell wall; these processes can compromise the nutrients offered by the chlorella. To avoid this, TriPow cracks the cell wall by using sound frequency, which we think is super cool!


If you have ever tried chlorella or spirulina products in the past, you may have been turned off by the smell. TriPow has little to no smell, and a very subtle fresh taste, which again speaks to the quality of the ingredients and the overall product.

Allie’s TriPow Shamrock Shake recipe:

  • 1 cup plant milk (I used unsweetened almond)
  • 1 handful spinach
  • 1/4 teaspoon TriPow
  • 1.5 frozen ripe banana
  • 1/4 avocado
  • 2-4 medjool dates
  • 1 drop peppermint essential oil (or 1/4 teaspoon pure peppermint extract)
  • 1 tbsp. Cacao nibs, for serving (optional)

*Note: For a creamier version, add more avocado.
