At Spud we are more than just a grocery store, we want to change the world, one bite at a time. That’s why we’re pleased to be partnered with REAP – Respect for the Earth and All People. They are a “not-for-profit association for locally owned businesses that care about the community and the environment”.
Reducing waste and supporting the community go hand in hand at Spud. The average grocery store wastes 28% of its food, at Spud, our food waste is only 0.9% at most. With made to order items we reduce the amount of possible waste, and any other “less than pretty”, but still delicious food is donated to Leftovers Calgary and distributed to those in need.
According to REAP, “locally owned businesses spend, on average, 25% more of their revenue locally. This means your money recirculates in Calgary 2-4x and creates more good each time it changes hands”. The more local business you support, the more that ripples into your local community. At Spud we’re proud to support local makers and farmers, and provide the community with a convenient hub for purchasing local products.
We think businesses can support their local communities, the environment, and the world – while still making a fair profit.
