Fighting Food Waste for Waste Reduction Week
Did you know nearly 58% of food in Canada is wasted? Food security remains a large issue in Vancouver as well as across Canada. At Spud, every week is waste reduction week, and we are constantly looking for ways to reduce our food waste.
“Best before doesn’t always mean bad after”- Lori Nikkel, CEO of Second Harvest. This is our favourite quote from the article! We are proud to partner with local charities to donate food close to expiry, as well as work with wonderful nutritionists like Christina Wilton to help us learn how we can use up the vegetables in the back of our fridge!
Organizations like the Second Harvest are calling on policymakers to mandate food waste reduction targets for cooperations.
As national waste reduction week kicks off, Second Harvest is calling for a bigger commitment to help end food waste. The call comes amid millions of Canadians struggling to put food on the table.
“We need to set targets because there is a direct correlation between food waste and the climate crisis,” said Lori Nikkel, CEO of Second Harvest.
