We’re proud to be the lowest waste grocery company in Canada. Food waste is a huge problem in this country. We’ve all heard that $31 billion worth of food is wasted in Canada each year – that’s 40% of the total food produced in Canada. When you consider all the time, work, and resources that go to produce that food, just to be wasted, that number is even more staggering. That’s why Spud has always been committed to reducing food waste, and why we’re proud to be the lowest waste grocery company in Canada. How are we able to keep food waste so low? No In-Store Displays We’re an online store! No in-store displays for produce, meat, and bakery means we do not have food expire or get damaged sitting on the shelf. Only Ordering What We Need Because our customers are ordering for delivery in the future, we are able to use a “fresh daily” model, meaning some fresh items are only made when a customer orders them. This means we don’t over-order these very perishable, short shelf life items. We just get what we need. Not Needing Huge Inventory On Hand We get deliveries to the warehouse daily to fill customer orders, so we don’t hold on to a ton of inventory. We turn over 80% of our inventory every 48 hours, and 100% of inventory is turned over in under 12 days – it takes conventional grocery stores 27 days to turn over inventory. Making Use Of “Imperfect” Products If we do have products that are about to expire, we donate them to charities that redistribute them to help . We also sell produce that is slightly past its prime or damaged as “imperfect” produce on the website.
