Avalon Dairy Ltd.

Avalon Dairy (Valley Pride) is the oldest operating dairy in BC. It began in 1898, when Jeremiah Crowley traveled from the small town of Western Bay, Newfoundland to Vancouver for the gold rush. By the time Crowley reached Vancouver the gold rush was over, but he was so impressed with Vancouver, that he returned to Newfoundland to bring his family back to settle here permanently.

In 1906 the Crowley family purchased a house on Wales St., which came with 5 cows. From this, they built up Avalon Dairy. In the same year Jeremiah purchased acreage at 5805 Wales, which is the present location of the Dairy. The farm house that was built for the Crowley family 1908 is still in use today.

Avalon Dairy is certified through PACS (Pacific Agricultural Certifying Society #16011).

If you’re looking for genuine European bread baked the traditional way, look no further than Artisan Bake Shoppe. Master baker Markus Jaeger, who is from Mannheim, Germany and Ursula Baker, a native of the “Dreiländereck” near Lindau where Germany, Austria and Switzerland meet, jointly run the popular bakery. Markus had been Artisan’s head baker ever since his arrival in Canada.

Ursula has an equally impressive background and was voted “Germany’s Best Baker” in 2000. She now also looks after the pastry side of the business.

Their breads are crafted by hand using the most basic of natural ingredients, leavened with natural starters and little or no yeast. The long fermentation process gives the breads their unique flavour and texture. Baked in a hearth oven, they have distinctively delicious crusts. From the ancient grain bread to their raspberry white chocolate loaf, you’re sure to enjoy Markus and Ursula’s work!
