Spud and Be Fresh are known for sustainability, it’s something we’re proud of. The environment drives every decision we make. So when we decided to launch meal kits, we knew we had to approach it the same way. Meal kit packaging is a huge problem. That’s why we set out on a mission to make Canada’s most sustainable meal kit. Our packaging has been carefully selected to ensure it is the best possible option for the environment. Learn about the reasoning behind each component:

Reusable Meal Kit Bags

Why did we choose it?

  • Durable, insulated, and reusable these bags are built to keep food and the environment fresh
  • Reusables save energy and resources compared to single use items. These bags are not only good looking, they’re super sustainable too

Where does it go?

  • Back in your Spud bin! We’ll come right to your door to pick it up. Next we’ll bring it back to Spud HQ where we’ll clean them for future use.

Bagasse Plant Fibre Container

Why did we choose it?

  • The containers are made from a renewable resource: plants!
  • The lids are 100% recyclable in your blue bin.

Where does it go?

  • Containers: your municipal green bin, or other commercial composting facilities where they exist.
  • Lids: your municipal blue recycling bin.

Kraft Paper Produce Bags

Why did we choose it?

  • It’s made from paper! We try to put most produce loose in the Meal Kit bag to reduce on packaging, but sometimes things need to be kept together. These bags do the trick with minimal impact on the environment.

Where does it go?

  • If it is pristine, your paper recycling bin is the best place to put it. If it is food-soiled, your compost bin.

Wood Fibre Spice Packets

Why did we choose it?

  • It’s compostable, from a renewable resource, and is crystal clear so you can see what’s in the package before using it.
  • Our spice packs are made from a new material called NatureFlex, which is constructed mainly of cellulose harvested from wood pulp from FSC  (Forest Stewardship Council) managed forests.

Where does it go?

  • Pull off the sticker and put it in the garbage. Put the spice packet itself in your backyard composter or in your municipal green bin, whichever you prefer.

Cooler Packs & Freezer Jackets

Why did we choose it?

  • They’re reusable! Eliminates packaging waste since they are put back into the system after you are done with them.
  • Keeps everything at the perfect temperature to ensure your fresh meats, veggie proteins, and dairy products are kept at the optimal temperature.

Where does it go?

  • Back in your Spud bin: we’ll come right to your door to pick them up. Next we’ll bring them back and meticulously clean them for their next use.

Clear Plant Plastic Containers

Why did we choose it?

  • These containers are made from a renewable resource: plants!
  • Keeps all your liquid ingredients food safe, in their container, and does not soak through.

Where does it go?

  • Compostable where commercial facilities exist.

Reusable Spud Bins

Why did we choose it?

  • They’re sturdy, easy to carry, keep your food safe, and best of all: they’re extremely reusable! Instead of sending you massive cardboard boxes to dispose of, we make our meal kit packaging gentle on the environment.

  • Back on your doorstep when your next Spud delivery is due to arrive or schedule a free bin pickup.
